Multi disciplinary Artist / Performer / Educator...B.F.A. Painting Syracuse University...have worked and taught in a variety of media for 43 years.
I approached Peter Svoboda one day about showing my T-Shirts @ C.N.Y.Artists. he liked my work and I displayed them for about 3 weeks and sold none. No problem, other than Peter's constant meddling in my business suggesting frivilous things like placing erroneous signs like - "Straight from N.Y."...Which my T-Shirts were not ( they were done in N.Y. in 2008...clearly signed and dated...that's 5 years ago... hardly straight from N.Y. No matter, my N.Y. market is strong and profitable...in fact, all of the 75 shirts that I displayed were profit...the last of 400 pieces. This Winter, I'll add another 150 pieces and be a total of 750 pieces strong with other denim, baby wear and Silk Screened original Metaphysical Designs. N.Y. C. is great for it's eclectic tastes, which allow an artist to really be creative.
So One day Peter comes up to me and suggests that I consider a commission that he had been trying to get going. Of course he couldn't paint it, but he had lots to say about how it should be done and how i should make the deal and this and that!...Sheesh, can the artist with the degree handle the business please?
The customer was very uninformed, opinionated and non committal...the worst type. Advice...let them go to a furniture store or a designer who matches paintings with drapes and carpet. Artists paint...we don't decorate.
Long story short...the customer OK'd the first model and saw the finished work and OK'd that and took it home. Then I get the call about how she now has a painting that she can't use because it's too red ( reddish brown ) the very color she said she wanted along with a couple of others. The kicker is that, Peter, backstabbed me and was talking to my customer behind my back and get this...Peter and the customer LIED to me ( there is…

Hi folks,
Some here will remember me. I've been away on some writing adventures. I was originally involved on numerous sites, and had to cut back to concentrate on my bread and butter, my published works. Since I've been gone, I've sold numerous poems and short stories. Add to this a few books I've had published recently as well as all of the Editing I've been doing on other writer's short stories and Novellas. My book cover work is advancing too.

Notes about NETWORKING from "The Profitable Artist" by Artspire
Networking
“...is about developing a base of people who will support your efforts and want you to succeed....
Networking is about finding and building relationships with people you care about who are linked to new opportunities, new markets...”
Attend art openings and start making new friends.
“A genuine interest in other people delivers a genuine interest in you.”

At the Hang Local, Artist and curator Ty Marshal asked me this question:
Maria, you had a lot of art shows last year. What is your secret?
At that time my only response was networking.
Networking did help me find new opportunities to show my art in different venues,
but I realize that I didn't five a complete answer.
The real "secret" that helps me, and many other professional artists,
to showcase my work is the awareness of the many web sites that publish opportunity listings.
Here are some that I check out weekly:

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to post an update about the Delightful Devas. Although we are still selling the Delightful Devas as canvas wall hangings, the Devas decided they would like to see more of the world.
As a result, they are now available as beautiful ladies tee shirts as well. This way they able to get out into the world on a more personal level. Be sure and stop by the CNY Artists' store in Shoppingtown Mall to see them. They will be vey happy to see you!

The really cool thing about being an artist is that I can leave my junk all over the house and just call it a "still life".
And guess what????
You can learn how to paint a still life...or how to creatively leave your junk around the house.
